Tourist information portal The Vipava Valley

The Vipava Valley lies in the western part of Slovenia, on the transition from central Slovenia to the Friuli lowlands. From east to west it is surrounded by the Nanos and Hrušica plateaux as well as the distinctive Trnovo forest; the Vipava Hills in the south separate it from the Karst. In the west the Vipava Valley runs into the Goriško plain. The thirst of the smooth bottom of the valley is quenched by the main thread of water, the Vipava river, which connects the upper and lower parts of the valley. Its journey starts in Vipava and ends in the lower part of the Vipava Valley, where it flows into the Soča river. |
The variegated relief, pedology and climate of the area all dictate a highly various set of agricultural activities and different types of land cultivation. Together with its adjacent plateaux the Vipava Valley is the land of many colours. Early in the spring, when the winter still carves her masterpieces into the plateaux, the Valley already wraps itself in the tenderness of white blossoms. And while the fields of gold heat the Valley with the fiery warmth of the corncobs, when the Valley breathes with the tender summer complexion of the peaches, the plateaux cover their green meadows with the gaily coloured carpet of flowers. Then they blush with the ripe fruits of raspberries … and the Valley answers with a smile of grapes. Same time … Parallel lives … The land, where paths cross, meet and separate, has a turbulent history. We often hear of historical names, of major events and minor life-stories, individual lives with clear purposes, of holy and ominous signs, these silent-speaking writers. If anything, it was the Fate that stamped the life of this piece of land – the Vipava burja (a strong north-east wind) that time and again graces us with its presence. This wind gave the Valley its character. The Vipava Valley – a brilliant plan or a mosaic of marvellous coincidences? By all means an ardour that turns to returns ...
